“HOWE SOUND” – Jill King, Jake Galbraith, and Bryon Thompson have been performing together since 1991 but this is their first performance in a whole lot of years!! They’re thrilled to be back together, and even more thrilled to be coming to the very stage where Deep Cove Folk’s founder Jill, and ‘great-big voice’ actor and musician Bryon, met. YES, right here on the Deep Cove Folk Stage!

Dobro and guitar player Bryon, is a singer-songwriter and music teacher, whose influences range from jazz to folk, and James Taylor to Dizzie Gillespie. His powerful lead vocals are legendary. He has played for many years with one of the Island’s favourite bands “Bryon Clayton Thomas.” BCT have played at festivals and venues up and down the Island since 1999. Long-time member of Cowichan Valley’s dance band “Shady Grove” Bryon is also one-half of that sweet-sounding duo, “Huckleberry Holler.”

Jake has been indulging his musical habit for more than fifty years now, mostly as a performer, but also in various capacities as a producer and sound engineer. He is known as both a solo singer-guitarist and as a multi-instrumentalist who has performed in a diverse range of ensembles at festivals and venues all across Canada. For several years, Jake booked the feature entertainment for the Victoria Folk Music Society, and was active in concert production for the Whistling Gypsy Centre for Community Music and the Getting Higher Choir in Victoria. He was the performing host of the very popular Great Canadian Songs Concert, as well as Main Stage MC at the Filbert Festival in Comox for many years.

Jill began singing as a teenager in her native New Zealand, and has since sung in that country, Australia, England, Canada, and the United States. Her wide and varied repertoire reflects her experiences living on several continents. As an unaccompanied singer of ballads, sea songs, and the traditionally male-led shanties, her melodic interpretations are never boring (sometimes beautiful!). She carries an English Concertina around in a canvas ditty bag decorated with sailors’ traditional knot-tying – sometimes she even plays it! She has performed at all kinds of venues, as well as music and maritime festivals – around the world.

Together “Howe Sound” sing, play, and ‘say’ a wide range of musical styles. Equally at home with song or story, they positively revel in each others company on stage. It’s what allows them to effortlessly weave spine-tingling stories with intricate harmonies. Their enthusiasm and tremendous energy always engages the audience. This September performance features an abbreviated version of Herman Melville’s classic tale, first published in 1851 – Moby Dick. Sometimes in verse, sometimes in song, their dramatic rendition brings the tale up to modern times and understandings. They look forward to seeing you there.
