Flying Snail

Flying Snail is a trio formed by two long-time Canadian musicians, Norman MacPherson and David Wilkie, and vocalist Denise Withnell.

A veteran of the North American music world, Denise Withnell has been lead vocalist for the last 22 years with the band Cowboy Celtic. The band has taken her and David Wilkie all over the U.S., Scotland, Ireland and South America. Denise also has a solo CD, Rose Petal Pie, which she describes as “neither cowboy nor Celtic.” Making her second appearance at Deep Cove, she mixes a little jazz, Western swing, originals and the undefinable into a wonderful mix of story and song.

Norman MacPherson and David Wilkie started playing music together in 1967 when they formed one of Victoria’s legendary rock bands, Moxie. Norm was Valdy’s guitarist for many years and continues to play with him when schedules permit. Norman has also performed and recorded with Connie Kaldor, Roy Forbes, The Poppy Family, Burton Cummings and David Foster.

David Wilkie has led Cowboy Celtic for 23 years, and has produced seven CDs for the group. Early in his musical career, David recorded his Mandoline Kid album, which featured Gaye Delorme, one of Canada’s finest guitarists. After a stint with Diamond Joe White, David joined Ian Tyson’s band and is featured on three of Ian’s albums. He formed The Great Western Orchestra in the early 1980s and recorded three albums, followed by The Cold Club CD with legendary guitarist and singer Amos Garrett. David is also featured on Amos’ solo acoustic project. Both David and Amos recorded with Maria Muldaur on her Richland Woman Blues Grammy-nominated album.
