Cathy Miller

A long and varied career is what Cathy Miller aspired to, and that’s what she’s gotten. Starting in Ottawa Ontario as a folksinger, songwriter, concert promoter and singing teacher, she began to experiment with how far her expressive voice and enthusiastic performances would take her.

It led to children’s concerts, writing topical songs for CBC radio, vocal coaching for a dance company, composing for theatre, teaching songwriting, singing jazz, and Calgary. In Calgary she was an enthusiastic part of one of the most active folk music markets on the continent. She toured regularly across Canada solo as well as with Eileen McGann and David K in a scripted concert called “Two Thousand Years of Christmas”. A gig in Yellowknife (“best gig ever!”) led to her marrying John Bunge, a member of the “Gumboots”. Then they moved to Victoria. Six days after they moved here she released her first CD about quilting. Yes, quilting – for 18 years she’s been known as “The Singing Quilter”, touring the world and releasing 5 CDs of original songs on the topic. (And yes, she’s also a passionate quilt-maker.)

Now that she’s “off the road”, she’s back in Victoria and thrilled to be performing at the Deep Cove Folk Club. She stops by occasionally to sing for the open stage but hasn’t done a full set since 2012. She’s very much looking forward to stepping out into some new material and revisiting some favourites from her 5 “non-quilting” recordings. More info at www.singingquilter.com.
